“Every 15 seconds a woman is beaten in this country…”
Wynona Ward, born on the 4th of July, grew up in poverty on a rural back road in Vermont into a family where violence was a common occurrence. She escaped at seventeen and made a new life as a long haul truck driver with her childhood boyfriend, Harold.
But a visit home years later turned her life around. “I found out another child in my family was being abused and it was then I realized that I wanted to reach out and help other families caught in the same cycle of violence.”
So while Harold drove. Wynona turned the sleeper of their truck into a classroom. She studied the Law. Her goal, to create a mobile law centre that enables women to gain safety and independence.
“It is very difficult for women to come forward; they feel ashamed of what has happened to them. When they reach out from their isolation, I can sit at their kitchen table and talk with them as a peer.”
In 1998 Wynona graduated from law school and “Have Justice, Will Travel” took to the road.
So far she has helped over fifty women get out of abusive situations.
“One woman helps another, who helps another, who helps another. That is how abuse is stopped. That is how communities become violence free.”
